Background on Oriental Rugs

Handmade rugs have been produced for thousands years.
The earliest surviving fragment of a woven piled rug is the Pazyryk Rug which dates back to the 5th century BC (Over 2500 years ago) and was discovered in 1949 by the Russian archeologist Rudenko in Pazyryk valley in Siberia, Russia.

The Oriental rugs can be divided into two main categories. The Tribal Rugs and the Workshop rugs. The earliest rug weaving traditions and techniques were developed of the tribal weavers and the pieces had truly a “functional” intention.
